Poultry: An Alternative Earning Source
Current Scenario
Poultry farming of country chicken or rural poultry farming is been in practice since decades in India. Generally, in backyard poultry, local, indigenous birds are reared. Traditionally these birds had a poor egg and meat production capacity compared to commercial broiler and layer farming. But with improved strains there is a considerable improvement in the performance. The biggest scope of country chicken is the low initial investment and high economic returns. The per capita protein consumption has been a subject of concern since quite some time in India. Eggs and poultry meat are the cheapest and most easily available option for this. Although there has been a tremendous growth in poultry farming over the past few decades, rural poultry has not shown much improvement. This is because it has been largely neglected sector. The key lies in focusing on the various aspects of rearing, better management practices and a scientific approach.
Advantages of Country Chicken Farming
The advantages of country chicken farming are as below:
Low initial investments clubbed with higher economic returns.
Country chicken farm can be started with just two birds and gradually increased to a flock.
Owing to the high demand of local chicken, the birds and the egg produced by them can be sold in the local market irrespective of the season.
Leftover feed, grains and various agricultural by-products can be used as feed for the birds. In other words, the feed cost is negligible.
Country chicken or ‘desi murgi’ and brown egg variety has a higher demand than other breeds.
There is no labor cost practically involved since the family members especially children and senior citizens act as ‘laborers’ in maintaining the farm. Hence it is a boost to the family income.
Since the eggs and poultry birds can be sold almost any time, rural poultry is a form of ‘any time money’.
If the birds are raised in an organic farm then the quality of the chicken and eggs are much better. This is because the birds are raised in a stress-free environment. In this method the poultry wastes like droppings, extra feeds etc. are directly applied as organic manure and increases crop yield.

KUROILER
KUROILER® is a branded dual purpose bird which has been developed through selective and controlled crossing of high yielding indigenized poultry germ-plasm. It has been developed by KEGGFARMS Private Limited, a company formally recognized by the Department of Science and Technology as an R&D Centre. KUROILER® has been acclimatized to Indian tropical/subtropical conditions an environment for several decades. It is capable of thriving in harsh village conditions in the same way as the non-descript flock variety. It is a low input, dual purpose, hardy bird with high productivity and desirous features of indigenous birds.
SONALI
The Sonali is a cross-breed of Rhode Island Red cocks and Fayoumi hens and has a similar phenotypic appearance to that of local chickens; it was introduced in 1996–2000 in northern parts of Bangladesh, through these projects. Sonali birds are well adapted to the country’s environmental conditions so require less care and attention than other breeds, making them easier for women and children to rear.
Traders can sell Sonali at higher prices than local chickens. The Sonali population has been increasing and in 2010 about 150.9 million Sonali day-old chicks were produced, representing about 35 per cent of the country’s total commercial broiler and layer production. Small and marginal farmers started to rear Sonali birds commercially in response to the market demand for coloured birds. The live weight of Sonali meat birds was lower than that of commercial broilers, but Sonali meat raised almost twice the price of commercial broiler meat. Sonali birds under the semi-scavenging system were found to have better economic performance than birds reared under intensive management. However, this system requires more extension services like vaccination, technical advice etc. from government and private companies.
GRAMPRIYA
Gramapriya is a breed of chicken developed by the Project Directorate on Poultry based in Hyderabad. The Gramapriya starts laying eggs at an age of 175 days. In 72 weeks a Gramapriya chicken can lay 200–225. Gramapriya is a crossbred chicken developed by the Indian Government through a Hyderabad-based project under an All India Co-ordinated Research Project. Gramapriya chickens have been developed for backyard rearing. They have a high favourability rating among farmers in India. Gramapriya chicken are best suited to preparation of TANDOORI and Grill type dishes.
